Happy Halloween!!!

Message from our “Prez”:

I can't believe that summer is over already!  Where did it go?  We had the Alzheimer's Memory Walk this past Saturday.  Those in attendance were Debbie Auld, Bill & MaryAnn Lustfield and Tom & Charlene Butler, all Dover residents.  Where was everybody!!!  It was a beautiful day and we got the job done, thanks to Bill, MaryAnn, Tom and Charlene!  Our next project is the Road Cleanup on October 13th.  That is also the date for our next meeting, but I'm not sure where it's going to be yet, so I'll let everyone know as soon as I know.  Meeting of The Minds is coming soon and I can't wait to go to Key West!  We have 23 people attending this year!  That's all for now.....

Your Prez,

 Debbie

The cover artwork for the Live in Anguilla CD/DVD is finally available. The cover shows a picture of Jimmy Buffett with Bankie Banx. The new CD/DVD combo will be released on November 6, 2007.

Sun Dogs, the documentary about the Jamaican Dog Sled Team is coming out October 2nd. You can order the DVD at Amazon.com.

A trailer for the Sun Dogs movie is now available. There's a brief clip of Jimmy adding his commentary.

SUN DOGS is a story of second chances. Rescued from the streets and animal shelters of Kingston, Jamaica, twelve stray dogs are trained to be the stars of Jamaica’s first dog sled racing team. The crew, spearheaded by pop superstar Jimmy Buffett, brings the unlikely meeting of a traditionally snow-bound sport to the sand and surf. But it is not just the dogs that are given a second chance. The team’s dog mushers are given the opportunity of a lifetime as they cultivate their love of animals while receiving an education and traveling the world. Special Features on the DVD include four mini-documentaries: “Jimmy Buffett and the Jamaica Dog Sled Team” – exclusive footage of Jimmy Buffett; “How to Teach Your Dog to Pull in Harness;” “The Jamaica Dogsled Team Taking on the World;” “The Work of the JSPCA;” plus a “Dog-ography: Meet the Mutts.”

Firefighter faces suspension over Buffett concert 'sick' day
By Douglas A. Moser , Staff writer
Gloucester Daily Times

A city firefighter who officials said called in sick to attend a Jimmy Buffett concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on Labor Day weekend was ordered suspended for a week without pay.

But firefighter/ paramedic Jonathan Sanger, who has been with the Fire Department since 2000, has yet to serve the suspension, originally imposed last month, pending a decision on his appeal to the city Personnel Department.

In the days leading up to the Sept. 2 Buffett concert, Sanger had posted a note in the fire station asking for a volunteer to switch shifts with him. When no one stepped forward, Sanger called in sick, fire officials said. The sick call forced fire Chief Barry McKay to dip into the overtime budget to fill Sanger's shift in order to meet minimum staffing levels required to keep
all city fire stations open.

McKay, who issued the original suspension last month, said Sanger appeared for an appeal hearing before Personnel Director David Bain on Sept. 25. Bain, whose decision was still pending yesterday, did not return several phone messages.  McKay said the case involved sick leave but would not discuss it further. "There was a disciplinary hearing, but I won't get into any more details of it," he said.

Reached yesterday, Sanger said "All your information' s wrong," but would not comment further. According to records obtained by the Times last year, Sanger used 4 3/4 sick days in 2004, 13 1/2 sick days in 2005 and eight days through October last year. The suspension and hearing related only to the Sept. 2 sick day. The sick day came less than three weeks before McKay began closing the Magnolia and Bay View fire substations to conserve his rapidly dwindling overtime budget. To the surprise of many, McKay said on Sept. 14 that the overtime budget of $400,000 for this fiscal year would be drained in two to four weeks. He
began closing substations on Sept. 20.

The Fire Department spent $518,964 on overtime for all of last year, according to city auditor Joseph Pratt. The department was originally budgeted for $258,481 in overtime but received another $250,000 after a fire killed a Lanesville woman living less than two miles
from the closed Bay View station. After the fatal fire, Bell ordered McKay to use overtime whenever necessary to keep Bay View open 24 hours a day and Magnolia open overnight.

Four councilors - Bruce Tobey, Walter Peckham, Jackie Hardy and Sefatia Romeo - have called a special City Council meeting for next week to discuss how to keep the substations open for the rest of the year.  One suggestion they will investigate is directing $225,000 in state "pothole" money to the Fire Department. The city received $325,000 in pothole money - so called because it is meant to patch gaps in local aid.

"This is an interim fix," said Peckham, whose ward includes Magnolia. "It's something we have to do. The public has not been informed on what happened to begin with, and our stations have to be open. It's not an option."

IT SURE BUGS BUFFETT!!!

October 1, 2007 -- DON'T mess with Jimmy Buffett and his "Parrotheads." The crooner is going after Six Flags' 20 theme parks, including Great Adventure, charging that its 10,000-member "Carrothead Club" for kids who are fans of Bugs Bunny is a copyright infringement. But Six Flags rep Wendy Goldberg says: "I'm not sure how the concept of children in foam carrot hats is going to be confused with significantly older Hawaiian shirt-wearing, margarita-swilling Parrotheads. Clearly imitation wasn't what we had in mind!" She says there are no plans to discontinue the club.
